Future of Social Media

Every week, there seems to be a new app released. Needless to say, social media is evolving more and more every day. Around 2010 was when Instagram was released, I remember sitting on my Uncle’s couch with my brother and we both had just made our first Instagram accounts. This was back when no one cared about how many likes they got and were more worried about what filter they were going to use on their already over-saturated photo. No one knew about VSCO or filters that came from outside applications. No one even really understood the blue check or what it meant.

Today, there are thousands of apps and hundreds of them are social media-based with the intention of connecting others around the world. There are apps to meet others, romantically or not. There are apps centered around dogs meeting with other dogs, farmers meeting other farmers, and apps centered around socializing with others that are like-minded individuals. Some of these apps have even evolved into being able to help in-person events such as paying for goods and services.

With all that is going on in the world, one must be thinking ‘What’s Next?’ We have already begun to see changes and improvements in Apple’s devices and even competitors like Microsoft creating a phone of their own. Motorola has even mentioned creating a phone that has two screens — a phone unlike any other.

Advertisements will also improve and become more accessible, I believe. On Instagram, this idea has already been created. The shopping app, as it’s already linked to the user’s account, makes it pretty accessible for users to buy with just a few clicks. I have a feeling that the shopping method will eventually be taken away though, as I don’t know anyone who actually uses the feature.

Augmented and Virtual reality is definitely something that I think will be more apparent on social media. It’s already (sort of) around, as influencers already tag brands in their stories, but live tagging an item and being able to link it to an immediate page will be around more in the future.

More video content will also be introduced, I believe. With new social media platforms emerging like LunchRoom, TikTok, Robin Hood, and more, these apps have the potential to evolve even more over the new few years. Most users are also interested in video content, as it’s easy to pay attention to a quick one-minute video and retain that information.
